Citizenship & Permanent Residency

Make Australia your permanent home — and keep your status secure when you travel.

What it is

Permanent residence itself doesn't expire while you stay in Australia — but the right to re-enter does, five years after grant. The Resident Return visa renews that travel facility for current and former permanent residents, so you can leave and return without losing your status.

Good to know
  • If you're in Australia with an expired travel facility, you're still a PR — you just can't re-enter if you leave
  • Spend 2 of the last 5 years in Australia and you'll usually get a full 5-year facility
  • Shorter facilities (1 year, or 3 months) are available on the strength of your ties

General eligibility — in brief

  • Current or former Australian permanent resident (or former citizen)
  • 2 years in Australia as a PR within the last 5 years — for the 5-year travel facility
  • Less time in Australia: show substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties that benefit Australia
  • Absent 5+ continuous years: also show compelling reasons for the absence
  • Meet character requirements
What it is

Citizenship gives you an Australian passport, the right to vote, and a status that never expires. Most permanent residents apply by conferral once they've met the residence requirement. Approval is followed by a citizenship ceremony where you make the Australian Citizenship Pledge.

Good to know
  • Children under 16 can usually be included on a parent's application
  • Most applicants sit the citizenship test on Australian values, history and government
  • Travel carefully before applying — absence limits are strict

General eligibility — in brief

  • Permanent resident (or eligible NZ citizen on a qualifying pathway)
  • 4 years living lawfully in Australia, including the last 12 months as a PR
  • Away no more than 12 months in those 4 years, and no more than 90 days in the final year
  • Pass the citizenship test (or interview, depending on age)
  • Be of good character
  • Intend to live in Australia or maintain a close and continuing connection
