Australian Student and Student Guardian Visas

Study full-time at an Australian school, college or university — and bring a guardian if you’re under 18.

What it is

The single visa for all international students — school, English language (ELICOS), vocational (VET) and higher education. It lasts the length of your course (up to five years) and lets you work up to 48 hours a fortnight during term time, and unlimited hours during official course breaks.

Good to know
  • The Genuine Student requirement replaced the old 'Genuine Temporary Entrant' test — your study intentions and history are assessed closely
  • Family members can join you, with limited work rights
  • Finish your course and you may qualify for the Temporary Graduate 485

General eligibility — in brief

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) in a registered CRICOS course
  • Meet the Genuine Student requirement
  • English test evidence, unless exempt
  • Overseas Student Health Cover for your whole stay
  • Enough money for tuition, living costs and travel — the amount is set by Home Affairs and indexed
  • Welfare arrangements if you're under 18
  • Overseas Student Health Cover for your whole stay
What it is

Lets a parent, legal custodian or relative live in Australia to provide care and support for a student visa holder who is under 18 (or, in limited cases, an older student needing support). The guardian's visa usually runs alongside the student's.

Good to know
  • No work rights, and only limited part-time study
  • You must be able to support yourself and the student financially
  • You generally can't bring other family members under 6 with you (limited exceptions)

General eligibility — in brief

  • The student you'll care for holds (or is applying for) a student visa and is under 18
  • You are their parent, legal custodian or a relative aged 21 or over
  • Positive skills assessment
  • You can provide accommodation, welfare and other support
  • Under 45 when invited
  • Enough money to support yourself and the student
  • Adequate health insurance
  • Meet health and character requirements
